    Notes from record give his service number as 3261. He was a private in both the 94th Foot (11 years 118 days from Nov 1862 to Feb 1854) and the 43rd regiment (10 years, 14 days from 1 Mar 1854 to 14 Mar 1864).
    John enlisted 3 Nov 1842 at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk at 18 years seven months which fits with his 14 Mar 1824 birth at St James, Bury St Edmunds.
    He served in the East Indies and was discharged on his 40th birthday in 1864 at Chatham, Kent and gave Bury St Edmunds as his intended address. He appears on the 1871 census at Timworth, just outside Bury and is staying with his late sister's second husband Charles Spink.
    There's a notation "Indian Mutiny Medals" which shows that in 1857 he was in India with the 43rd Regiment.
    On 1 January 1879, John was admitted as an in-pensioner to Royal Chelsea Hospital and is found there on census night in 1881, 1891 and 1901.
    He passed away on 30 March 1908 and was interred on 3 April.
