    He was an apprentice carpenter at Millmerran indentured to his father James Silver. John was born 26 Jul 1897 at Kooroongarra, Queensland.Took oath on enlistment at Toowoomba.
    Physical description: Age 19 years 11 months Height: 5 ft 5ins. Weight 124 pounds Chest 31 1/2 33/1/2. Complexion fresh. Eyes grey. Hair fair. Domination: Pres.
    I James Silver, Millmerran do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:- That my son John Alexander Silver is over 18 and under 21 years of age and is enlisting in the A.I.F with my consent.
    Appointed to 26th Rifles 9th Batt, Rifle Range, Brisbane.
    On home leave 8 to 12 September 1917.
