His daughter Janet who died 12 Jan 1865 aged 1 month. Also the above Alexander Silver who died at Crossley the 11th day of April 1882 aged 72 years.

5 June 1882 Inventory of the Personal estate Of the late Alexander Silver
At Stonehaven the fifth day of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighty two, in presence of john Guthrie Smith Esquire Advocate, Sheriff of Aberdeen Kincardine and Bailiff Compeared John Silver, residing at Crossleys, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, and gave in the inventory of the personal estate of the deceased Alexander Silver and oath thereon underwritten desiring that the same might be inserted and registered in the Sheriff Court Books of Kincardineshire in the Sheriffdom of Aberdeen Kincardine and Banff. Which desire the said Sheriff found reasonable and ordained the same to be done accordingly and of which inventory and oath the tenor follows viz:-

Appeared John Silver residing at Crossleys, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Executor of the deceased Alexander Silver, farmer, Crossleys, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, who being solemnly sworn and examined depones, that the said Alexander Silver died at Crossleys aforesaid domiciled at Crossleys upon the fourteenth day of April eighteen hundred and eighty two ? and the deponent has entered upon the possession and management of his personal or moveable estate as executor dative quo of the next of kin to the said Alexander Silver. That the deponent knows of no testamentary settlement or other writing left by the deceased relative to the disposal of his personal estate or effects, or any part thereof. That the foregoing inventory signed by the deponent and the said Sheriff Clerk Depute as relative hereto is a full and complete inventory of the personal estate and effects of the said deceased Alexander Silver wheresoever situated, and belonging or due to him beneficially at the time of his death, in so far as the same has come to the deponent?s knowledge. That the said deceased was due and owing at the time of his death to persons resident in the United Kingdom, the debts enumerated in the foregoing schedule amount to one hundred and fifty eight pounds seven shillings and fourpence. That the nett value at this date of the said personal estate and effects situated in Scotland, including the proceeds accrued thereon to this date, and after deducting the amount of the said debts and funeral expenses, is eleven hundred pounds sterling and does not exceed twelve hundred pounds sterling. That the deponent has entered, or is about to enter, upon the possession and management of the deceased's estate as executor foresaid, along with the said Mrs Mary Ann Falconer or Silver, William Falconer and John Silver. That the deponent does not know of any testamentary settlement or writing relative to the disposal of the deceased's personal or moveable estate or effects, or any part thereof other than the before mentioned mutual settlement. That the foregoing inventory, signed by the deponent and the said George Kemp is a full and complete inventory of the personal or moveable estate and effects of the said deceased, wheresoever situated, and belonging or due to him beneficially at the time of his death, in so far as the same has come to the deponent's knowledge. That the amount of estate duty (and interest thereon) payable upon this inventory as particularly shewn in the statemnet for estate duty and summary annexed hereto, is paid to the commissioners of inland revenue conform to the receipt upon page No. 1 hereof. That confirmation of the personal or moveable estate in Scotland amounting in value to 1110 pounds five shillings and threepence is now required. Follows mutual settlement before referred to: We Jmes Silver, farmer, Blairs, Maryculter in the County of Kincardine and Mrs May Ann Falconer or Silver, spouses, being desirous to settle our affairs in the event of the death of either of us do hereby assign and dispone to and in favor of the survivor of us and of William Falconer, farmer, Newtonleys, Stonehaven, John Silver, farmer, Harvieston, Kinneff, Stonehaven and James Duguid, advocate in Aberdeen and the survivors or survivor, acceptors and acceptor of them and to ther assignees whomsoever all and sundry lands and heritable estate presently belonging to us and wheresoever situated as also all and sundry our moveable estate of every kind and description and wheresoever situated together with the writs and title deeds of the said heritable subjects and the vouchers and instructions of our moveable estate and we nominate and appoint our said trustees to be our sole executors. But declaring that the said general disposition is granted by us in trust always and for the uses and purposes aftermentioned namely: First. For payment of our just and lawful debts, deathbed and funeral expenses including the erection of a suitable tombstone and the expense of carrying these presents into execution. Second. That our said trustees shall hold the whole estate belonging to us or either of us and shall invest the same in their own names and pay over the interest or produce arising there: from the survivor of us during all the days of the life os such survivor and on the death of the survivor of us we direct thatour said trustees shall divide our whole estate equally share and share alike amonst our children Isabella Silver or Robertson, Jessie Menzie Silver or Kamester, James Silver and Alexander Silver providing that in the event of any of the said children predeceasing and leaving lawful issue such issue shall take their parent's share; and we give to our trustees powers of sale and that either by public roup or private bargain and also power to appoint a factor or agent to manage the trust who may be one of their own number and to allow such factor or agent the usual remuneration. And in general we give to our trustees and executors the fullest powers and immunities competent. and we reserve power of redemption. And we reserve full power to alter or revoke these presents in whole or in part.And we consent to the registration hereof nd of any codicils or additions hereto for preservation. There's little doubt that John Silver did join his brother James in Queensland but no record is found of his death in Australia, but other information suggests he may have gone to New Zealand.


Further information also comes from correspondence from James Murray Silver, who refers to a letter that mentions the Harvieston Silvers: There is an interesting referance in a letter written by Geo. Robertson (b. 1894, a grandson of my aunt Isabella Robertson nee Silver), to our common cousin, James Silver (b. 1890) of Atlanta, as follows:
"There were other Silver cousins. They were Alex, John, and James and Isabel. These were successful farmers of Haverston (Harvieston) just south of Stonehaven. When Alex died, John came to visit my mother on departure to Australia, probably with his nephew Alex. (nothing more ever heard of them). James was a joiner and went to Australia as also did the third son, James, of Alex (above) who, just about 1919 followed his uncle Jim out to Australia. I hope this is clear. Isa Silver above, you see, had the same name exactly as my mother. She remained single a long time but lately married an old forrester named Duncan of Banchory.
Now Alex and John after doing well dropped back by, having too successful a time, did, I think, become too fond of a dram. I remember at our grandpa's funeral they arrived at Sunnyside in a coach and horses. And believe me, few farmers at that time (about 1902) posessed such luxuries. I then was 7 or 8 yrs. and had walked 5 miles to Sunnyside. And then walked to the church yard (two miles)-- got so tired walking behind the cortage that I sat down at the side of the road in a ditch -- in fact, went on strike. The Silver coach or carriage drew up beside me and took me aboard. This was my first experience of traveling in state!
Some of the Silvers 'were nae sma drink' you can see."
NOTE: The drink reference is rather telling given that Alexander Silver's cause of death was acute alcoholism.

Even though he was supposed to have left Scotland and headed to Australia, no death record is yet found for him there. However, there is a 1920 arrival in Perth, Western Australia for a Mr J. Silver whose destination is Toowoomba, Queensland. His brother James was living near Toowoomba at the time. He is found in at least one newspaper report of being in Millmerran with his brother. Descendants of James believe John may have gone to New Zealand. There is a New Zealand death in 1930 for a John Silver aged 75 which potentially fits. However, his parents are not named on the death certificate and his birthplace is given as Glasgow.
However, there are no other death records anywhere else in the world that potentially fit this John Silver.
So, the following burial place may be his in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Four months before his death, an illegitimate child named Jessie Silver Fenton was born at Harvieston, the daughter of Jessie Fenton, housekeeper, whose address was given as Blackburn Mearns, Tannadice, Dundee. The child's father is not given on the birth certificate.
The first conclusion to be drawn is that Alex was the child's father based on a DNA connection between her descendants and Silver descendants. It is known that in 1901 Jessie Fenton was housekeeper at Cheyne Farm near Stonehaven which is just a few miles from Harvieston Farm.

Known to generation of Aberdeen University students, Mr James G.Bisset, bookseller, who resided at Crynoch, Bieldside, has died.
Mr Bisset, who conducted the well-known Aberdeen business of Bisset's Bookshop, 85 Broad Street, was ninety-three* years of age.
He retired two years ago, after completing sixty-five years in the business.
A native of Maryculter, Mr Bisset made his business his great hobby in life, and he spared no efforts in meeting the needs of his customers.
Despite his years, Mr Bisset was a remarkably fit man, and it was only a fortnight ago that he became ill.
Predeceased by his wife some years ago, he is survived by a marriage daughter, Mrs H.R.Ferguson, who resides in Chesterfield.
Mr Bisset was precentor for many years in Cults East Church, of which he was senior elder.
*His birth record shows he was born November 1854 which means he would have only been 92.

JAMES A. GAMMIE.
THE honourable roll of the Kew Guild contains few names of members whose association with Kew is of longer standing, and no name more deserving of honour by its members than that of the President-elect for 1918.
Born on November 12, 1839, at Kingcausie, in the county of Kincardine. Mr. Gammie served his apprenticeship at Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, where his father had charge of the gardens for 45 years.
At the age of 17 he came south, working successively in the gardens of Stapleton Park, York*; Messrs. J.Veitch, Chelsea, and Stockwood Park, near Luton, entering Kew in the spring of 1861, among his colleagues of that year being Mr. W. B. Hemsley and Mr. J.K.Jackson.
During a stay of four and a half years Mr. Gammie's work was wholly confined to the decorative and flower garden department under Mr. Craig.
After this period of service at Kew, our President-elect was specially selected by the Secretary of State for India, in August 1865, to serve as Manager of the young and struggling Cinchona Plantation in Sikkim.
The task he had to undertake was difficult. The cultural requirements of the various Cinchonas had still to some extent to be ascertained ; the soil was indifferent; the climate was not ideal.
The uphill work called both for knowledge and judgment as to what was feasible and for courage to attempt what might seem impossible.
If the hour ever produces the man this happened when Mr. Gammie devoted his talents to the problem, and to hini is largely due the success that, in the face of difficulties which might have disheartened the bravest, has rewarded the effort to produce Cinchona Bark on a commercial scale in the Government Plantations in Sikkim.
This, however, was but half the task that confronted the Cinchona Department. The other was to separate from the harvested bark the alkaloids it contained and to do this economically and on a commercial scale.
In this, too, Mr. Gammie took an important share. Before a method of separating quinine had been devised, a process was adopted for the extraction as a mixed febrifuge of all the alkaloids in the bark.
This process was worked by Mr. Gammie from 1879 onwards and called for the same skill and thoroughness that had marked his work as a planter.
When Mr. Wood, the quinologist, who designed this process, retired in 1879, he and Mr. Gammie still kept the further aim of separating pure quinine in view.
At last Mr. Wood invented, in his private laboratory in London, an admirable process which Mr. Gammie perfected in the factory in Sikkim.
It is on official record that without Mr. Wood the process would net have been invented; without Mr. Gammie it would not have been successfully applied to manufacture.
For his share in this great work Mr. Gammie, then Resident Manager of the Government Cinchona Plantations, was promoted to be Deputy Superintendent of the Cinchona Department.
But for him the humane object of the Indian Government when they introduced Cinchona to the East, which was to place quinine within reach of the poorest, could not have been realised so early and so effectively as it was.
After eleven years spent in working and improving this process Mr. Gammie retired in 1897.
If the thoroughness with which Mr. Gammie's work as a planter was done made the growing of Cinchona a success, it was this same quality that enabled him to prepare cinchona febrifuge and, later still, to separate quinine.
The capacity for mastering his subject was accompanied by a corresponding ability to prevent his subject from mastering him.
This double gift was nowhere more apparent than in the studies of his leisure hours, which were devoted to natural history.
None have ever made more use of their opportunities in this fleld than our President-elect, and few'have acquired a wider knowledge of the subject as a whole, the method followed being that of thoroughly mastering some particular branch of the fauna of British Sikkim before seriously undertaking the study of another.

Our obituary notices to-day include the name of Mr James A. Gammie a distinguished Aberdeenshire man, who for 32 years was Superintendent of the Government Cinchona (Quinine) Plantations in Sikkim.
Mr Gammie served his apprenticeship at Drum Castle, where for 45 years his father was gardener.

He was the most modest of men (writes a correspondent), shy and retiring, and loving the quite way of life, but was great in friendship and hospitality.
He kept us his interests in nature study to the last, and his life was full of devotion to the best things.
The Church of Scotland station of Kalimpong never had better friends than Mr Gammie, his wife and their like-minded family.
These survive him, and also his two sisters, Misses Gammie, Lochwood, Drumoak.

FARMER CRITICISED.
Leaves Body in River.
Having been informed that the body of a man had been seen in the Yarra at Templestowe, John Cox, a farmer, continued milking his cows. He went to look for the body on the following day. His action was strongly criticised by the deputy coroner (Mr. Phillips) at the morgue yesterday, when an inquiry was held into the death of Eben Gammie, aged 67 years, who was found drowned on August 27. Cox said in evidence that he was milking cows at about 5 o'clock on the afternoon of Sunday, August 26, when he was told that there was the body of a man in the river. He told a young man to inform the police, and continued milking his cows. On the following morning he went to the river and found the body of Gammie.
Mr. Phillips. - It is extraordinary that a man hearing of a body in the river does not do something. Probably you were more interested in your cows, and had they been in the river you would have gone.
Continuing, Mr. Phillips said that one would think a man would inform someone else even if he were too busy to take a human being out of the water. It seemed a clear case of suicide. He returned a verdict of "found drowned," there being no evidence to show how Gammie got into the river.

Esson.-At Inchmarnoch Schoolhouse, Dinnet, on Feb 14, Charles Esson, in his 82nd year. Funeral service in Stothert Memorial Church, Lumphanan, on Mon., Feb 17 at 2pm.
It seems that both Isabella and Charles died around this same time because their is a notice in the Aberdeen Press and Journal 27 February 1947, p3 which reads thus:
ESSON.-Miss Esson wishes to convey her sincere thanks to all relatives and friends and neighbours for the many kind expressions of sympathy extended to her in her recent sad double bereavement.-Inchmarnoch Schoolhouse, Dinnet.
At a guess, this must be Charles Esson's niece Evelyn who was staying with the family on the 1911 census. Can't find any information about Evelyn Esson, not even her birth, so she may have been 'adopted' by Charles and Isabella anbd raised as their own.

She had three children; the youngest, James Silver Kamester, was decorated for service at Gallipoli as a corpsman in WWI, after that he served in France and was commissioned in the RAF, and finally badly injured in a training crash in England. He became a Doctor (MD) and had his practice in Weston-Super-Mare, near Bristol. He died in 1973.
